Thanks to Adonis for putting the sketch opportunity together and really being the man behind the scenes organizing it all. I was fairly oblivious to this form of collecting, and it's much bigger, and WAAAY cooler than I had ever known. Checking out the other books from various artists that are just simply amazing is quite humbling.
Again, I got to finish up the batch with Captain America. This one and the previous Thor sketch, were for Adonis. He has specifically asked for a Cap version of the Uncle Sam "I want You" WW2 Poster pose. It was fun to recreate and I got to spend more time on rendering and trying out new techniques instead of coming up with a composition or pose. I really enjoyed this one.
So thanks again to Adonis and the group from The Collector Society "Signature Series" message boards that have given me the chance to doodle on these books a bit. You all seem like a tight group of guys and gals that have a passion for art and comics.

The Nativity Scene with Batman characters (you may be struck by lightning - but that'll be one cool picture).
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
Or A Christmas Carol with the cast of the X-Men.
ReplyDeleteMan, I could do this for hours. I'll stop now.
lol, Im not limiting the entries! Keep em coming! THough I will probably avoid lighting strikes with my final choice. heh just fyi
ReplyDeleteHow about Christmas in Asgard? Volstagg would make a good Santa. (I guess Odin would too)
ReplyDeleteHow about Cobra Commander and Destro both dressed as Santa fighting and the Baroness as Mrs. Claus watching in disgust. Cobra Soldiers/Vipers can be working around them wrapping weapons as elves!
ReplyDeleteDan Klingensmith
How about Cap delivering mail to some Joes, Maybe Stalker, Gung Ho, Clutch, Grunt and Rock N Roll dug in in a trench somewhere nasty?
ReplyDeleteMatt Brandenberg

Okay....great suggestions! But lets go for some with less than half a dozen characters involved. I gotta fit this in 9x12 btw.
ReplyDeleteBatman and Robin at an orphanage celebrating Christmas.
ReplyDeleteSgt. Rock with Sgt. Fury celebrating after the Battle of the Bulge.
prohaley (TW)
hey Robert, Santa is out nowadays! and who is better than a Silver Surfer who carries the Christmas gifts on his cosmic surf! and with a Christmas hat on of course! ;D haaha
ReplyDeleteThe Avengers in their Quinjet passing out presents.
ReplyDeleteSanta Memphisto with pain and demons for his gifts =)
ReplyDeleteThe Joker & harley quinn trying to steal presents from Batman Santa, and Robin as a elf.
ReplyDelete"Or A Christmas Carol with the cast of the X-Men."
ReplyDeleteI second that.
Firefly, Frank Castle, or Deadpool on rooftop dressed as Santa dropping a grenade down the chimney. Ho Ho BOOM!
ReplyDeleteA Christmas tree with G.I. Joe, MOTU, MASK, Transformers, and ThunderCATS toys underneath it, complete with one or more of the characters looking surprised/playing with them.
ReplyDeleteOk so here are three suggestions
ReplyDeleteHarley with a santa hat and mistletoe dangling off it.
Poison ivy with strategicly placed mistletoe.
How about Batwoman and The Question. You could get two religious holidays in one go since batwoman is Jewish.
Cheers
Lee-Erin
Spider-man and his amazing friends (80's theme) Jessica (Firestar)and Peter (Spiderman) walking together down a downtown sidewalk, holiday shoppers about, with sales windows along...Bobby Drake (iceman) making it snow for everyone. (Or something like that, changes welcome)
ReplyDeleteThe Punisher standing in front of a huge Christmas tree (i.e. Rockefeller Plaza tree)looking up and smiling.
ReplyDeleteAnd I can't resist putting this in, just in case it would actually win..lol. Harley Quinn (Batman Arkham City reference)giving hot coffee to the GPD. They have sarcastic looks as if she really expected them to drink the coffee. This image is illustrated in more of an older Norman Rockwell feel without the paints. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not suggesting you copy another artist's work, but have you seen Alex Ross' JLA Christmas Party? What a classic!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=16744
Roof top scene, Gotham in the back ground its snowing Catwoman up on tip of her toe other leg bent, looking sexy holding mistletoe over Batman's head going in for a kiss. (OptionalBatman has a Santa hat on.)Batman also leaning in. In the background the Bat symbol shining in the sky, Santa and Reindeer sleigh can bee seen flying across it.
ReplyDeleteTypical Santa at the mall scene, with Santa sitting there looking a little tired, all around him the Xbabies are going crazy, running wild, shooting off their powers and tearing things up. One of the Xbabies is sitting on Satnas lap with a VERY LONG wish list. Could use Power Pack instead of the Xbabies for this.
ReplyDeleteDr Strange reading Gift of the Magi to a group of orphans.
Hulk covered in tape and pieces of wrapping paper is handing a poorly wrapped gift that looks like a giant boulder or lump of coal to the viewer of the sketch. On the gift is says in badly written writing To (winner of the sketch) Mery Xmas frm Hulk.
How about Galactus getting a 50 percent off voucher for Planets-R-Us from a Thanos dressed as Santa!
ReplyDeleteOne or several of the Joe Marines, Gung Ho, Leatherneck Mainframe Etc. helping out the Toys for Tots. I sent this via twitter but I had best follow the rules for the contest
ReplyDeleteSo here was the idea I put on Facebook:
ReplyDeleteHow about Snow Job riding a dog sled, but instead of dogs, it's Santa's Reindeer, but the reindeer look from the classic Rankin/Bass Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer special, so Rudolph is leading the pack. You could even put the Abominable Snowman and Yukon Cornelius in the background if you want.
Here is another idea:
Optimus Prime being driven by Santa delivering the toys....because you know, that is way cooler than traveling by Reindeer, and maybe they are being chased down by Starscream who wants to ruin Christmas, but doesn't stand a chance.
I should mention too, if you post on here and use the anonymous option, please include at least your name in the post so I can contact you somehow.
ReplyDeletethanks, I love all these ideas, keep them coming!
Idea 1: WonderWoman wrapping, like garland, her golden lasso around a decorated Christmas tree. (Obviously the wife likes this idea)
ReplyDeleteIdea 2: Spiderman with a Santa hat and a fake beard carrying a webbed bag of presents
Idea 3: A smiling Alfred holding a wrapped present with a tag that say "Thanks! From" and a bat symbol
Dwayne Johnson as Shipwreck in a Santa Hat
ReplyDeleteGeneral Hawk and Cobra Commander(what version of CC is up to you) Shaking hands in front of Santa. Maybe a decorated tree behind them or a snow scene
ReplyDeleteChuck Norris as Santa with a shirtless Kevin Bacon (beware the nipples) on his lap.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
Superman as Santa, with speed lines behind him...
ReplyDelete"How Else Could Santa Get To All Those Houses In One Night?"
Alpine and Bazooka exchanging gifts...their own action figures. So Alpine gets an Alpine and Bazooka gets a Bazooka.
ReplyDeleteSnake Eyes and Scarlett kissing under the mistletoe, at his cabin, home for the holidays
ReplyDeleteYou can include santa hat, weapons on the mantel, araskage rug and timber laying near fireplace and christmas tree in the background if you like.
Oh, this is Eagleyes from the IDW/Joereloaded/DDP boards
Batman or Spiderman (or both or any other super hero(s) you deem appropriate--I picked those two because they are associated with cities and looking out for the average person) on a rooftop looking down at a street scene. On the street there's someone ringing a Salvation Army bell while someone else donates money. Someone else is bring food to an elderly person while others are giving out blankets to the homeless. There are other people bringing gifts to some kids who don't have any--you get the idea. Anyway, Batman/Spiderman are more in the background and the focus is on the "everyday" heroes. In the sky above is the Christmas star.
ReplyDelete--Tim (tlayne@stuart-hall.org)
(Shortened repost of what I put on the IDW Forum: http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopic.php?t=10917 Pic references are embedded into that post.)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see a "tribute cover" styled piece based on a beloved Christmas image. Perhaps not the Nativity - too fraught, that - but maybe Rockwell? I know I saw a DC parody of the iconic "Freedom from Want" Thanksgiving piece... though it could work for Christmas, too.
(I'd perhaps do a G.I. Joe family dinner... or a convergence of DC/ Marvel superheroes, one big happy family for a day.)
For something more traditionally Christmas, all Rockwell -
- "Christmas Rush"
- "...We came in our new Plymouth!"
- Santa with Elves (I'd love to see you do a self portrait of yourself as Santa, and make the elves the characters you most love to draw... Snake Eyes and the X Men, Cap, JLA favorites, all working on coloring or inking their own titles or tear sheets alongside you.)
Other ideas: A comics-character version of that last scene in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" where everyone is gathered around the tree. If you throw in a few Joes, Timber could stand in for Snoopy...
Do you remember an old Sega Genesis game called Kid Chameleon? Well it was like Sega's answer to Mario(NOT Sonic). Well, he busts open prize blocks(that, true to platform fashion, stick in mid-air) and some of them contain helmets that transformed him into something cool.
ReplyDeleteInstead of hitting a prize block, it's a wrapped-up present.
Instead of a helmet falling out, a Santa hat.
I made a thread at the Hisstank forum
ReplyDeletehttp://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-general-discussion/174346-firefly-wild-weasel-simple-comrades-bffs-spoilers.html
about Wild Weasel and Firefly possibly being friends, so another idea I had would be:
Wild Weasel and Firefly are sitting across from each other at a table in a diner drinking coffee. They both have a wrapped-up present from the other at their sides.
I vote for the Asgardian Christmas scene....
ReplyDeleteyou could do the cobra commander as santa and all the rest of the joes as elves having a shoot out on santa's sleigh through the air. :)
ReplyDeleteIn Honor of a Great Creator and a first issue cover.
ReplyDeleteSanta Punching out the Grinch, homage to Captain America Comics #1.
RIP Joe Simon.
Santa leaving items in Cobra theme'd stockings
ReplyDeleteCC coal
Destro a new helmet polisher/buffer
Serpentor Snakes
Baroness something sexy
